Thanks for your thoughtful response, Mohammed. I've written quite a bit about the design of software and other things (e.g., my book The Thoughtless Design of Everyday Things). The point of this article was not to describe the purpose of design in general, but merely to point out that spending a little more time on design work initially is likely to save more than that amount of effort otherwise needed to fix the design or the product later on.
