Lots of good stuff here, Lee. People should neither fear nor avoid creating a written requirements specification in some form. Human memories are imperfect, they fade and distort over time, and other people can't access them. Documented requirements -- in whatever forms communicate most effectively -- serve as a persistent group memory. How can that be a bad thing?
