It is perhaps more accurate to say that religion gave us the concept of sin, not evil. Sin is a religious concept, of going against one particular rule book from one (or more) particular alleged god. Evil is a human concept, not treating people as you would wish to be treated. Consider evil as a violation of the Golden Rule, which is a human and societal -- not religious -- precept.
Religion and god play no part in my life, but I do try to treat other people as I wish to be treated. I don't need a god to tell me how to live a moral life.
