If someone is "good" (e.g., follows a particular moral code) only because they fear some ultimate divine punishment if they aren't, then they aren't good at all. They're the people who would be likely to throw out the morals and run wild if they learned that no damnation awaits them.

As an atheist, my morals simply come from recognizing that there are many other people on the planet who are entitled to the same rights, courtesies, and necessities of life that I am. I didn't need a god to tell me that, just an awareness of the ages-old Golden Rule. And I don't need the fear of a looming, vengeful god to tell me that certain behaviors toward others or toward society are undesirable, hurtful, or counterproductive. My conscience reminds me of that whenever I don't do what I should, or do what I shouldn't.
