As soon as one recognizes that there is no god, no heaven, no hell, no divine retribution nor reward, then we can forget all the nonsense about "we are all sinners" and "we are all in need of his mercy and salvation," and drop the associated guilt and fear.
Then we can get back to just being imperfect people who do our best to treat our fellow residents of Earth fairly and kindly, just as we wish to be treated. We can accept that this is the only life we know we have, so we should make the best of it, instead of trying to pick out a particular rule book that offers the hope of eternal something-or-other if we only think right and follow a particular credo. That seems simpler to me.
